Sunny Ledfurd goes to preschool

Catching someone in what could be construed as a unsavory situation is always fun. Especially when you tell them that you, too, are just as much as a miscreant as they are. Then you can become friends. The other day I went to pick Frat Boy The Younger up from his conservative Christian preschool (which I love – well, not the conservative part, but they aren’t teaching religious doctrine to my preschooler, and it is a great school, so whatever. I’m just setting the stage.), and there was another mom there wearing a Sunny Ledfurd t-shirt.

A smile crept across my face, and I leaned over and said, “I like your t-shirt.” She looked down to remember what she’d thrown on that day, and sheepishly replied, “Ohhhhh … I didn’t realize anyone here would know who Sunny Ledfurd is. “We’re cool,” I said, “I love his song about Myrtle Beach.” We started laughing, because it is a hilarious song and we knew each other’s secret.

Even though it is faster for us to get to Charleston area beaches from our house, and I frankly prefer that area, the thought of Myrtle Beach still makes me smile. It may be KMart by the sea, but the indoor lazy rivers, the mini-golf, my favorite movie, Shag, and Sunny Ledfurd’s ode to it keep a special place in my stifled redneck heart.

Here’s the video to the song. It’s not suitable for work or kids or uptight people. But it is awesome and silly if you are none of those things. Enjoy.

Myrtle Beach is THE beach of choice for people from Tennessee. We can get there quickly and it reminds us of Pigeon Forge, but with more ocean.

I guess that’s why Gatlinburg is so comforting. It’s the Myrtle Beach of the mountains.

Can you believe I have NEVER been? But this song is cracking me up.

I missed a trip with friends in college because I was being a good Jewish girl and headed home for Passover. :>

Andrea, you have got to get there. Just to behold it in all of its redneck glory.
