Since I didn’t tailgate this weekend (Good call. It would’ve been painful to be in Columbia watching USC stomp my beloved Dawgs in person. But if I had been there, I would have brought Bacon Burger Dogs.), I fired up plugged in the George Foreman and tried the Grilled Apples recipe from John McLemore’s DADGUM That’s Good, Too! cookbook.
Yeah. They pretty much rocked. Except I didn’t have any ice cream to eat with them. Fail.
But you know what they would also be great in? Oatmeal, salads, wraps, cobblers, pies, and just by themselves as a snack. Perfect for this time of year when apples are plentiful. I’m also saving some to cut up and put into an omelette in the morning with sun-dried tomato and chicken sausage.
Next on my list to try from the cookbook are Nancy’s Smoked Mac & Cheese (you know my rules about mac & cheese), Sm0ked Sweet Potatoes, Grilled Salsa, Grilled Zucchini with Rosemary and Feta, Grilled Peaches and Plums with Honey-Citrus Sauce and I guess I’m going to have to get my hot little hands on a fryer, because the Fried Pimento Cheese Balls are calling my name.
A few weeks ago, I wasn’t familiar with John McLemore, his company, Masterbuilt, or Action Against Hunger. Now that I am, I’m proud to be a small part of the project, in which they partnered in the Bridge Program at In Goode Company in Charlotte. Bridge Program “provides free assistance for refugee and immigrant children, focusing on creating an environment where people of all cultures can learn English and become healthy, confident members of their communities.” On September 18, 2012, Mr. McLemore visited and gave a cooking demonstration featuring nutritious family-friendly recipes and was followed by a barbecue supper.
He’ll be back on October 9, 2012 as a guest on Bob & Sheri and John Boy & Billy on their morning radio shows discussing his new cookbook and his partnership with Action Against Hunger.
Want to try some of these recipes? Mr. McLemore says his favorite for fall include the Deep Fried Turkey, Smoked Sweet Potatoes, Nancy’s Smoked Mac & Cheese (Told you.), and the Masterbuilt Court Pear Pies.
